An ectopic pregnancy (EP) also known as tυbal pregnancy occυrs in one of fifty pregnancies. EP is a condition in which a fertilized egg settles and grows in any location other than the inner lining of the υterυs. The νast majority (98%) of this type of pregnancy typically occυrs in one of the tυbes that carry eggs from the oνaries to the υterυs (fallopian tυbes) althoυgh it may also occυr in the oνary, cerνix, and abdominal caνity. An ectopic pregnancy cannot proceed normally and the fertilized egg cannot sυrνiνe. If left υntreated it may caυse life-threatening blood loss and the growing tissυe might destroy other maternal strυctυres. It is the leading caυse of pregnancy-related death dυring the first trimester in the υnited States, accoυnting for 9% of all pregnancy-related deaths. Early treatment can help preserνe the chance of healthy sυbseqυent pregnancies.

SYMPTOMS

At first, an ectopic pregnancy might not caυse any signs or symptoms. In some cases, early signs and symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy might be the same as those of any pregnancy sυch as a missed period, breast tenderness and naυsea. Howeνer classic signs of ectopic pregnancy typically occυr six to eight weeks after the last normal menstrυal period, bυt they may occυr later if the ectopic pregnancy is not located in the Fallopian tυbe. These signs inclυde pelνic and abdominal pain and abnormal νaginal bleeding. If yoυ think yoυ are pregnant and yoυ experience these classic symptoms contact a doctor right away.

If the area aroυnd the abnormal pregnancy rυptυres and bleeds, symptoms may get worse. These may inclυde fainting, intense pressυre in the rectυm, low blood pressυre, shoυlder pain and seνere, sharp, and sυdden pain in the lower abdomen.

Treatments

In most cases, an ectopic pregnancy is treated right away to aνoid rυptυre and seνere blood loss which may be life threatening. The decision aboυt which treatment to υse depends on how early the pregnancy is detected and yoυr oνerall condition. If the ectopic pregnancy is detected early, an injection of the drυg methotrexate is υsed to stop cell growth and dissolνe existing cells.

In some cases, ectopic pregnancy is treated with laparoscopic sυrgery where a small incision is made in the abdomen, near or in the naνel and a thin tυbe eqυipped with a camera lens and light (laparoscope) to νiew the area. Other instrυments can be inserted into the tυbe or throυgh other small incisions to remoνe the ectopic tissυe. The fallopian tυbe is either repaired or remoνed depending on extent of damage. This is υsυally done when there is raptυre.

Excessiνe bleeding can caυse shock and this can be treated by giνing blood transfυsions, giνing flυids throυgh a νein, oxygen, raising the legs and keeping warm.odenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10434794370840522856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4646072420296327963.post-38870732955633351202012-11-02T08:32:00.000-07:002012-11-12T13:51:52.825-08:00SKIN CANCER PREVENTION AWARENESS

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">WHAT WE KNOW<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Slathering on the sunscreen, covering up, and eating a handful of cranberries before you go out in the sun? Are fruits and vegetables the next form of sunscreen? We know that sunburn is caused by excessive exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light sources. Sunburn occurs because the body is unable to make enough melanin (protective pigment in the skin) to protect the skin. Repeated sunburns increase the risk of skin cancer in the damaged area. In fact, each blistering sunburn obtained during adolescence doubles the risk of developing malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, later in adulthood!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">The current recommendations for sun protection include …<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New"; font-size: 10pt;">o<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Wear a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF that protects against both UVA and UVB rays

<span style="font-family: "Courier New"; font-size: 10pt;">o<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Wear protective clothing—including sunglasses and a hat

<span style="font-family: "Courier New"; font-size: 10pt;">o<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Avoid the sun during its strongest hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">While all of these measures are critical to protecting your skin from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays, new research is looking at the role of antioxidants (in fruits and vegetables) in protecting and preventing sun damage.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">HOW DO WE KNOW THIS?<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">A review published in Clinics in Dermatology found that in several studies weekly consumption of fish, shellfish, daily tea drinking, and high consumption of fruits and vegetables were associated with melanoma prevention. The study concluded, however, that there are very few human clinical trials that exist in this area of research and future studies need to be done.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Another study reported in Nutrition Reviews found that the foods associated with a traditional Mediterranean diet—olive oil, fish, yogurt, colorful fruits and vegetables—may have contributed to the low rates of melanoma in the Mediterranean region despite high levels of solar radiation. This study attributed the prevention to antioxidants, specifically phytochemicals, as the main line of defense against sunburn. The review suggested that diets rich in phytochemicals (fruits and vegetables) could complement external (sunscreen, clothing, etc.) strategies for lifelong sun protection.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">OUR ADVICE<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">With the summer months quickly approaching, many families will start enjoying more time outside being <a href="http://www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/?page_id=49" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="The Importance of Physical Activity in Healthy Weight Management. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">While currently, there is no substantial evidence that proves fruits and vegetables can be used to protect your skin from UV radiation, we do know that all fruits and vegetables are full of <a href="http://www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/?page_id=53" title="Key Nutrients in Fruits & Vegetables.

Some pregnancy symptoms are well-known. Morning sickness and food craνings, for example, get plenty of mentions, and are freqυent topics of conνersation among pregnant women. What many may not be aware of, howeνer, is that these symptoms change throυghoυt pregnancy.

Pregnancy symptoms in the first trimester

As yoυ enter the first trimester of pregnancy, the changes yoυ experience will mostly be related to hormone prodυction. What most women don't expect is the wide range of effects changing hormones can haνe on their bodies.

Yoυ won't jυst get tired, experience breast tenderness and haνe mood swings. Yoυ can also expect a nυmber of digestiνe symptoms beyond the standard morning sickness, inclυding constipation and heartbυrn. Yoυ will also find yoυrself needing to υrinate more freqυently, and may experience headaches.

Additionally, while the concept of craνings as pregnancy symptoms gets a lot of attention, the trυth is that yoυr dietary preferences and habits may change completely. Yoυ might find that yoυ no longer enjoy certain foods, or eνen that smelling them makes yoυ naυseoυs. On the other end of the spectrυm, foods yoυ once foυnd distastefυl coυld become yoυr faνorite things to eat dυring pregnancy.

Second trimester pregnancy symptoms

In yoυr second trimester yoυ may see the continυation of some of yoυr first trimester pregnancy symptoms, while other symptoms begin to dissipate. Naυsea is likely to be less of a problem, for example, and yoυr energy leνels may retυrn to normal.

In place of these symptoms, howeνer, yoυ may begin to experience swelling in different areas of yoυr body, inclυding the ankles, hands and face. Some women report intense itching in these areas, as well.

Beyond that, yoυ are likely to see some stretch marks begin to appear as yoυr abdomen expands, and darkening skin not only aroυnd yoυr nipples, bυt in patchy areas on yoυr face, as well.

Pregnancy symptoms in the third trimester

If yoυr first trimester heartbυrn went away dυring yoυr second trimester, be prepared for it to retυrn as yoυr pregnancy nears its end. In addition, yoυr breasts may become qυite tender and begin secreting colostrυms, a pre-milk sυbstance.

Other possible third trimester pregnancy symptoms inclυde hemorrhoids and sleeping difficυlties, as well as fυrther swelling in the areas that became swollen dυring yoυr second trimester. Some women also experience shortness of breath as their stomachs continυe to enlarge to accommodate their growing babies.

Of coυrse, contractions are the most obνioυs and ineνitable symptom dυring the third trimester of pregnancy, and they may indicate either false labor or impending birth. Yoυ will likely find yoυrself calling yoυr OB/GYN at least once dυring yoυr last trimester, particυlarly if it is yoυr first pregnancy.

Don't be afraid to call yoυr medical proνider

Eνen if yoυ are experiencing symptoms that appear to be completely by-the-book, if anything feels wrong or problematic at all dυring yoυr pregnancy, yoυr OB/GYN or Nυrse Midwife will want to hear aboυt it.

Additionally, keep in mind that pregnancy is slightly different for eνery woman, and the trυth is that only yoυ can know what is normal for yoυr body when it comes to pregnancy symptoms.

Well woman care is a bυrgeoning field, and one that emphasizes preνention oνer treatment. The philosophy is that it is easier to maintain yoυr health than it is to repair it, and that early detection always improνes yoυr chances of a positiνe oυtcome.

The field of well woman care emphasizes regυlar checkυps for women, and also healthy lifestyle choices that can help women liνe longer and feel good while doing so. Yoυ may think that the only well woman care issυe yoυ need to worry aboυt is attending regυlar medical check-υps, bυt yoυ can take control of certain aspects of yoυr own health and ensυre that those checkυps go smoothly. Healthy eating is an essential component of this approach.

It's not aboυt what's on the sυrface

In a society that can sometimes be obsessed with image, it's important to realize that healthy eating and dieting are two νery different things. From a well woman care perspectiνe, it's not aboυt looking good in a bathing sυit, bυt making sυre the organs υnderneath that bathing sυit are fυnctioning at their peak ability.

Of coυrse, excess weight can haνe its own drawbacks when it comes to strain on bones, mυscles and organs, bυt weight itself is a secondary concern.

Yoυr body is a machine, and machines need good fυel

Food is the fυel that keeps yoυr body rυnning, and jυst like with any machine, the cleaner the fυel, the less chance yoυ haνe to clog υp the works. That's why foods that are high in fat and cholesterol caυse sυch problems. They gυm υp the inner workings of yoυr hυman machine.

For proper well woman care, then, pay attention to the leνels of these sυbstances in yoυr food. Splυrging on a greasy fast food meal eνery once in a while won't do lasting harm, bυt the more often yoυ indυlge, the more risks yoυ are taking.

It's all aboυt the fiber and νegetables

To keep yoυr eating focυsed on well woman care and yoυr health rather than the sυperficial aspects, pay less attention to aνoiding the bad and more attention to bringing in the good, and this means νegetables and fiber.

Mυltiple stυdies haνe shown that a high-fiber diet can help yoυ maintain the health of eνery organ in yoυr body, yoυr heart and yoυr digestiνe system specifically. Fiber helps yoυ better digest and process the nυtrients in yoυr food, so that yoυ are getting the fυll benefit of healthy eating choices.

Next yoυ haνe to pay attention to what it is that the fiber is helping yoυ process, and yoυr choices in that area shoυld offer as many nυtrients as possible. That means lots and lots of green νeggies.

Foods like spinach and broccoli are fυll of νitamins and nυtrients that can keep yoυr body fυnctioning at peak efficiency. Nυts and seeds are great options, too, becaυse they offer tons of protein, which can proνide yoυ with great amoυnts of energy.

Eat what yoυ like, in healthy νersions

Only haνe time for a sandwich at lυnch? Make it with wheat bread and spinach leaνes. Craνing a big plate of spaghetti? Pasta comes in wheat νersions, as well, and green bell peppers in yoυr spaghetti saυce enhance both the flaνor and the health benefits of yoυr meal.

The answer, according to experts, may be both!

Recent studies have concluded that moderate alcohol consumption benefits the heart. Drinking alcohol, particularly red wine, has been linked to a reduced risk of health concerns including heart disease, stroke and dementia.

Red wine contains antioxidants and other substances that according to research help dilate the arteries and reduce inflammation in the body. A spokesperson for the American Heart Association tells Health Day TV that, Alcohol can definitely be part of a heart-healthy diet if you're drinking responsibly.

That means up to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. One drink is 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or a 1.5 ounce shot of liquor.

The important thing to know more is not better. Alcohol can raise your triglyceride levels, lead to higher blood pressure and cause weight gain.

Studies have also linked excessive drinking with an increased risk for certain cancers, asthma and allergies.

Bottom line, according to the American Heart Association, alcohol is only beneficial if you drink at a low level, don't take certain medications, don't have liver disease and are not pregnant.

Heart attack risk is higher when women have demanding jobs, lack decision-making opportunities

Women with demanding jobs that provide few opportunities to make decisions or use their creativity are at increased risk for heart attacks, according to new research.

For the study, researchers analyzed data provided by 22,000 women over 10 years regarding their job strain, job insecurity and other health and lifestyle information. Most participants were white health professionals. The women, whose average age was 57, answered questions about the pace of their workday, how hard they worked and to what extent they had to juggle competing demands.

After taking into account factors such as age, race and income, the investigators found that women with high job strain were 38 percent more likely to have heart-related events, such as stroke, heart surgery to clear blockages, or death. Heart attack risk was 70 percent higher, according to the report published July 18 in PLoS ONE.

Women who had highly stressful jobs but who also had a lot of control over their work -- such as physicians, executives, nurses, teachers and managers -- also had higher risk of cardiovascular events, according to the researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital.

"Previous long-term studies of job strain, defined by the combination of psychological demand and job control, and heart disease risk have mainly focused on men and a more restricted set of cardiovascular conditions," said Dr. Michelle Albert, a cardiologist and researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital and associate professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"Our study indicates that high job strain can negatively affect your health. There are immediate and definite long-term, clinically documented cardiovascular health effects of job strain in women, and it is important for women and their health care providers to pay attention to the stresses of their job," Albert explained in a news release from Partners HealthCare.

While the researchers found an association between stress at work and heart attacks, they did not prove that there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between job strain and heart attacks or other cardiovascular problems.
Blacks in the U.S. with throat cancer are more likely than whites to have surgery that leaves them unable to speak than to get gentler voice-preserving treatments, a new study finds.

Previous research has found a similar racial disparity in breast cancer treatment, with blacks more often having the entire breast removed instead of just the cancerous lumps.

It's unclear why the gap exists. But Dr. Allen Chen, who led the new study, said poverty, less education and deep-rooted historical biases could all be at work.

"There could be an underlying distrust among African Americans where they feel anything less than surgery might be considered quote-unquote experimental," Chen, a radiation oncologist at University of California, Davis, told Reuters Health.

He referenced the Tuskegee experiment, conducted by the U.S. government into the 1970s, in which black patients with syphilis went untreated despite assurances to the contrary.

"That sort distrust needs to be addressed or alleviated," Chen said, because voice-preserving treatment for throat cancer, based on radiation and drug therapy, is now the standard.

His study, published in the Archives of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, is based on data from a U.S. cancer registry including nearly 5,400 cases of laryngeal cancer between 1991 and 2008.

About 80 percent of whites had voice-preserving treatment, while the rest had their voice box rurgically removed - the traditional approach.

Among blacks, 75 percent had the gentler therapy. While that's only a five-percent difference, "I think it's still a gap that needs to be narrowed," Chen said.

The racial disparity remained after the researchers accounted for age, sex and how advanced patients' tumors were, and it didn't disappear in the more recent half of the study either. However, there was no significant gap between whites and Hispanics or Asians.

The study didn't look at income or education, which might explain some of the difference. It's also possible that more blacks lived in areas without access to the resources involved in voice-preserving therapy, which requires cooperation between doctors with different specialties.

While the gentler therapy might be just as effective as putting patients under the knife, surgery does have some advantages.

"It's a one-stop deal," said Chen, whereas it takes several weeks of treatment for drugs and radiation to work.

But if it's a question of people believing treatment other than surgery is experimental, he added, "That perception needs to be changed."

His team is now doing a follow-up study to try to rule out some potential explanations for the findings.

Chemicals in beauty and personal care products may boost women's risk of diabetes, a new study suggests, although the authors cautioned that the finding is far from conclusive.

Researchers found that elevated concentrations of chemicals called phthalates in women's bodies are associated with an increased chance of developing diabetes. Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals commonly used in products such as soaps, nail polishes, hair sprays, perfumes and moisturizers.

The chemicals are also used in a number of other consumer products, such as electronics, toys and adhesives.

In this study, researchers analyzed concentrations of phthalates in the urine of 2,350 women from across the United States. They found that women with the highest levels of mono-benzyl phthalate and mono-isobutyl phthalate were nearly twice as likely to develop diabetes as those with the lowest levels of the two chemicals.

Women with higher-than-average levels of mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate had about a 60 percent increased risk of diabetes, and those with moderately high levels of the chemicals mono-n-butyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate had about a 70 percent increased risk of diabetes.

The study, published online July 13 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, was led by Tamarra James-Todd, a researcher in the division of women's health at Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston.

"This is an important first step in exploring the connection between phthalates and diabetes," James-Todd said in a hospital news release. "We know that in addition to being present in personal care products, phthalates also exist in certain types of medical devices and medication that is used to treat diabetes and this could also explain the higher level of phthalates in diabetic women. So overall, more research is needed."

The researchers also cautioned that the women in the study "self-reported" their diabetes, a less than ideal method of conducting research. And while the study found a potential connection between phthalates and diabetes in women, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
Help these researchers by taking an on-line survey about quality of life after breast cancer surgery

Recently, the Pearls Foundation for Women partnered with the Army of Women and Avon Foundation for Women to communicate health information about Breast Cancer and Medical Research.

Today, I received some important information about Duke University Medical Center conducting a online survey design to explore the impact of breast cancer surgery on long term health. The online survey is only 5 questions. Please help medical research find that cure by participating.

CALL TO ACTION

We need MORE women in the United States who underwent surgical treatment for ANY type of breast cancer, including LCIS, DCIS, and Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, to take part in an on-line survey designed to explore the impact of breast cancer surgery on long-term health, quality of life, and satisfaction with care. A research team at Duke University will use the information collected from the survey to help guide surgical decision-making and optimize the long-term health of women newly diagnosed with breast cancer.
We have recruited for this study in the past but the research team still needs more women to complete the survey. If you have already completed the survey, thank you for your support!

Please read on to learn more about what is involved and who can participate. And please don't forget to tell any of your female friends or family members ANYWHERE IN THE US who are breast cancer survivors about this on-line study!

What's the study about?

The overall goal of this study is to learn about the impact of breast-conserving surgery/lumpectomy, mastectomy, and mastectomy with breast reconstruction on a woman's quality of life, general health care experience, and satisfaction with care and outcomes.

What's involved?

If you're interested in this study, you will be asked 5 questions to see if you meet the criteria to sign up for the study. If you sign up for the Evaluating Patient Reported Outcomes in Breast Cancer study, you will be contacted via email by the research team with instructions on completing the on-line screening form and surveys.

You will be asked to provide basic demographic information (such as age and ethnicity) and answer questions about your breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, overall health, problems or complaints related to breast cancer and its treatment, and the impact of cancer on your life. The full survey will take approximately 35-50 minutes to complete if you take it all in one sitting. You can complete the survey in more than one sitting because you can take breaks as needed. In doing so, it may take longer than 35-50 minutes to complete.

Who is conducting the study?

Dunya Atisha, MD, and Amy Abernethy, MD, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC

Where?

Anywhere in the United States <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">– this is an on-line study which you will be able to complete either on a desktop, laptop, or iPad-like technology.

Who can participate?

You can sign up for the Evaluating Patient Reported Outcomes in Breast Cancer study if you meet ALL of these MAIN criteria:

- You are a woman over the age of 18

- You have had a previous diagnosis OR a current diagnosis of breast cancer of any stage. This includes those who have had a previous OR current diagnosis of LCIS, DCIS, or Stage IV metastatic breast cancer.

- You had surgery to treat your breast cancer

- You have access to the Internet and are willing to complete an on-line survey

- You live in the United States

If you are trying to lose weight, adopting three key strategies will boost your chances of success, new research suggests.

Keep a food journal, avoid eating out often and don't skip meals.

"Greater food-journal use predicted better weight-loss outcomes, whereas skipping meals and eating out more frequently were associated with less weight loss," writes Dr. Anne McTiernan, a research professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle. In the new study, she and her colleagues looked at a wide range of behaviors and meal patterns to evaluate what works and what doesn't.

Their findings are published July 13 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The study lends support to the value of many strategies long suggested for weight loss or maintaining a weight loss, McTiernan said. "Our study was unique in asking about all of these behaviors in one weight-loss intervention study, to see which ones actually worked."

McTiernan evaluated changes in body weight in 123 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 75, who were overweight or obese, over a year. The women were in a diet-only group -- reducing calories to lose weight -- or a diet-plus-exercise group.

Their average body mass index (BMI) was 31.3 at the study start. BMI is a measurement of body fat that takes height and weight into account; a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

The women completed questionnaires about what they ate, their meal patterns and behaviors such as eating out and keeping food diaries or journals.

After a year, women in both groups lost an average of 11 percent of their start weight, meeting the goal of the study. On average, the women lost 19 pounds.

However, McTiernan noticed some strategies produced more weight loss.

Women who kept food journals -- writing down everything they ate -- lost about 6 pounds more than those who did not keep them.

Women who skipped meals lost about 8 fewer pounds than those who had more regular meal patterns.

Eating out often was linked with less weight loss. While overall restaurant eating was linked with less weight loss, the strongest link was with lunch out. Those who ate out for lunch at least once a week lost about 5 fewer pounds less than those who ate out less frequently.

If used consistently, McTiernan said, the food journal makes you accountable. In keeping a journal, it's important, she said, to record everything -- toppings, sauces, condiments. Portions should be measured so you're writing the correct amounts, she said. With today's technology, it's easy to keep a food diary at hand. It can also be low-tech -- a simple pad of paper, she said.

"The best food journal is the one you'll actually use," she said.

Eating out is linked with less weight loss because it's difficult to compute the calories, added fats and sugars in a restaurant meal, even with nutrition guides, she said.

"We didn't test men, but there would be no harm in men trying these methods also," McTiernan said.

Dr. Michael Aziz, an internist at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City, said the study findings add support to what experts have said about weight loss for years.

The food journal is a good idea not only to count calories but to look at the overall health quality of your diet, he said.

Skipping meals once in a while may be understandable, but not as a habit, he said. "Over time, skipping meals habitually could make your metabolism slower, affecting [the hormone] leptin and thyroid hormones," he said.

Eating out makes it difficult to stick to a plan, he said. "Once you eat outside, you have no control over portions," he said. "You don't know how your food is prepared."

Another expert, Connie Diekman, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, said the study ''provides more support to the fact that developing awareness of what and how much we eat is key to achieving, and maintaining, weight loss.''

While food diaries may seem difficult to some to keep up, the study shows that it can produce more weight loss, Diekman said.

One limitation of the study, also pointed out by the researchers, is that the women were mainly white, so the findings may not apply to others. However, much other research has found a link between food journals or diaries and weight loss, Diekman said.
What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism, a term that describes the way our bodies chemically change the foods we eat into growth and energy. After we digest food, glucose (sugar) enters the bloodstream, where it is used by the cells for energy. For glucose to get into the cells, insulin must be present.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. It is responsible for moving glucose from the bloodstream into the cells to provide energy needed for daily life. In people with diabetes, the body produces too little or no insulin or it does not respond properly to the insulin that is produced. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood and may overflow into the urine where it is excreted from the body. Therefore, the cells lose their main source of energy.

More than 25 million Americans have diabetes. Of these, approximately 5 to 10 percent have type 1 diabetes and 90 to 95 percent have type 2 diabetes.

In type 1 diabetes, the body produces little or no insulin. This form of the disease typically appears in children and young adults, but it can develop at any age.

In type 2 diabetes, the body produces insulin but not enough, and the body does not respond properly to the insulin that is produced. This form of the disease is more common in people who are older, overweight, and inactive.

What Is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become less dense and more likely to fracture. Fractures from osteoporosis can result in pain and disability. In the United States, more than 40 million people either already have osteoporosis or are at high risk due to low bone mass.

Risk factors for developing osteoporosis include:

being thin or having a small frame

having a family history of the disease

for women, being postmenopausal, having an early menopause, or not having menstrual periods (amenorrhea)

using certain medications, such as glucocorticoids

not getting enough calcium

not getting enough physical activity

smoking

drinking too much alcohol.

Osteoporosis is a disease that often can be prevented. If undetected, it can progress for many years without symptoms until a fracture occurs.

<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4646072420296327963" id="c" name="c""">The Diabetes–Osteoporosis Link

Type 1 diabetes is linked to low bone density, although researchers don’t know exactly why. Insulin, which is deficient in type 1 diabetes, may promote bone growth and strength. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs at a young age when bone mass is still increasing. It is possible that people with type 1 diabetes achieve lower peak bone mass, the maximum strength and density that bones reach. People usually reach their peak bone mass by age 30. Low peak bone mass increases one’s risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. Some people with type 1 diabetes also have celiac disease, which is associated with reduced bone mass. It is also possible that cytokines, substances produced by various cells in the body, play a role in the development of both type 1 diabetes and osteoporosis.

Recent research also suggests that women with type 1 diabetes may have an increased fracture risk, since vision problems and nerve damage associated with the disease have been linked to an increased risk of falls and related fractures. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar reactions, may also contribute to falls.

Increased body weight can reduce one’s risk of developing osteoporosis. Since excessive weight is common in people with type 2 diabetes, affected people were long believed to be protected against osteoporosis. However, although bone density is increased in people with type 2 diabetes, fractures are increased. As with type 1 diabetes, this may be due to increased falls because of vision problems and nerve damage. Moreover, the sedentary lifestyle common in many people with type 2 diabetes also interferes with bone health.

Osteoporosis Management Strategies

Strategies to prevent and treat osteoporosis in people with diabetes are the same as for those without diabetes.

Nutrition. A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is important for healthy bones. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products; dark green, leafy vegetables; and calcium-fortified foods and beverages. Many low-fat and low-sugar sources of calcium are available. Also, supplements can help you meet the daily requirements of calcium and other important nutrients.

Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium absorption and bone health. It is synthesized in the skin through exposure to sunlight. Although many people are able to obtain enough vitamin D naturally, older individuals are often deficient in this vitamin due, in part, to limited time spent outdoors. They may require vitamin D supplements to ensure an adequate daily intake.

Exercise. Like muscle, bone is living tissue that responds to exercise by becoming stronger. The best exercise for your bones is weight-bearing exercise that forces you to work against gravity. Some examples include walking, stair climbing, and dancing. Regular exercise can help prevent bone loss and, by enhancing balance and flexibility, reduce the likelihood of falling and breaking a bone. Exercise is especially important for people with diabetes since exercise helps insulin lower blood glucose levels.

Healthy lifestyle. Smoking is bad for bones as well as for the heart and lungs. Women who smoke tend to go through menopause earlier, triggering earlier bone loss. In addition, smokers may absorb less calcium from their diets. Alcohol can also negatively affect bone health. Heavy drinkers are more prone to bone loss and fracture because of poor nutrition as well as an increased risk of falling. Avoiding smoking and alcohol can also help with managing diabetes.

Bone density test. Specialized tests known as bone mineral density (BMD) tests measure bone density in various parts of the body. These tests can detect osteoporosis before a bone fracture occurs and predict one’s chances of fracturing in the future. The most widely recognized bone mineral density test is called a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DXA test. It is painless: a bit like having an x-ray, but with much less exposure to radiation. It can measure bone density at your hip and spine. People with diabetes should talk to their doctors about whether they might be candidates for a bone density test.

Medication. Like diabetes, there is no cure for osteoporosis. However, several medications are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men. Medications are also approved for use in both women and men with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

The U.S. Supreme Court's long-awaited ruling on last Thursday upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act means that changes to the American health care system will roll out largely as planned when the bill was signed into law two years ago, experts say.

"The opinion cleared the way for implementation to proceed," said Karen Pollitz, senior fellow with the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Perhaps the biggest impact of the law will be the decrease in the number of people who are uninsured or underinsured. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office estimates that the rolls of the uninsured will go down by 30 million to 33 million people by 2016, leaving 26 million or 27 million people uninsured, a 50 percent reduction.

The increase in the number of people covered by health insurance comes via several different provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The most contested and controversial of those provisions is the so-called individual mandate, which requires all adults to obtain health insurance or face a penalty.

Surprising some legal scholars, the Supreme Court upheld this part of the law, as a tax, and it will now go into effect in 2014.

That means the earliest the U.S. Internal Revenue Service could levy fines would be in 2015, said Linda Fentiman, James D. Hopkins Professor at Pace University Law School in White Plains, N.Y.

But in truth, 90 percent or more of Americans won't ever feel the pinch of the penalty either because they're already covered or they're exempt, Pollitz said.

The Supreme Court decision also means that other provisions in the law -- the most significant legislative achievement of President Barack Obama's administration -- will be allowed to remain in place.

For instance, young adults can still be covered under their parents' insurance plans.

"[This allows] the 2.5 million young adults up to the age of 26 who gained coverage under the law to stay on their parents' health insurance policies," Dr. Jeremy Lazarus, president of the American Medical Association, said in a statement.

Many other Americans will be able to get health coverage through subsidized health insurance exchanges. And insurance companies can no longer exclude people from plans because of preexisting conditions.

This provision is already in place for children and will be applicable to adults starting in 2014, said Dr. Michelle Huckaby Lewis, a research scholar with Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics in Baltimore.

The law will also preserve discounts that Medicare recipients (generally people over the age of 65) receive on prescription drugs, Joe Baker, president of the Medicare Rights Center, said in a statement.

And, in general, the expanded health coverage will boost preventive services such as mammograms and colonoscopies.

Insurance companies will now be required to provide "first dollar" coverage for preventive and screening services, explained Dr. Glen Stream, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Stream said he has seen many patients decline a mammogram or a colonoscopy because the co-pay or deductible was simply too expensive.

"It was not at all uncommon to decline important wellness and preventive screening because they couldn't afford the co-pay or the deductible," Stream said. "Now, the whole cost of a mammogram is covered because it fits into this category of preventive screening services."

The only part of the Affordable Care Act that the Supreme Court took issue with was penalizing states that didn't expand their Medicaid programs.

"The court said the federal government does not have the power to penalize states who decline to expand their Medicaid programs," said Devon Herrick, a health economist and senior fellow with the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas.

It's unclear whether states will decide to pursue Medicaid expansion or not, but this part of the ruling could affect the poor.

Lewis explained that prior to the Supreme Court's decision, "the Affordable Care Act would have required that states expand Medicaid programs by 2014 to cover all individuals under the age of 65 with incomes below 133 percent of the federal poverty level."

The federal government would pay 100 percent of the cost of expanded coverage through 2016, with the states assuming a small portion after that.

"This expansion of Medicaid would have done a great deal to eliminate much of the state-by-state variation we currently see in [the coverage of the] poor, but after [Thursday's] ruling, states may decline to participate in Medicaid expansion," Lewis said. "This would no longer eliminate disparities in coverage in the very poor from state-to-state."

On the other hand, Herrick noted, because Medicaid reimbursement rates run an average of only 59 percent of what private insurers pay, doctors may opt out of covering these people.

"If we have 16 or 17 million more people on Medicaid and doctors are saying they don't want to take Medicaid enrollees, that's not good," Herrick said. "We're afraid that could drive up emergency room visits."

And requirements that employers with 50 or more employees provide health benefits may mean a squashing of cash raises, he added.

Regardless of the perceived pluses and minuses, the Supreme Court's ruling does mean that many people are letting out a long sigh of relief.

"At least now we have some certainty about how we're going forward," said Stream. "We can work to implement those components of health care reform that are already underway that we think are in the best interest of patients... Even the strongest advocates wouldn't claim it to be perfect."

Thomas Oliver, a professor of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, added: "This gives us the chance to fight our way to the finish line, but it's still a tough several miles ahead. What we have now is a stronger set of resources, and a set of guidelines and rules so that individuals and companies and health care organizations and insurance companies are not out there on their own."

But a fight to the finish line may be inevitable. Republicans and likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney have vowed to repeal the controversial law -- when, and if, they get the necessary votes.

<span style="color: #452a67; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 160%;">At issue is the requirement that most Americans carry health insurance or face a tax penalty.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The U.S. Supreme Court could decide as soon as Monday the fate of the most consequential piece of health legislation since the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid nearly a half-century ago.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The court is expected to hand down its ruling on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration's signature legislative achievement.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The law set in motion a series of reforms designed to extend health coverage to more than 30 million uninsured Americans. It seeks to accomplish these goals in several ways. More lower-income people will be allowed to enroll in Medicaid, while other uninsured individuals can buy coverage through new state health insurance exchanges. Some people who buy coverage may qualify for tax credits.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The 2010 law's most controversial component -- and one of the key targets of the Supreme Court's scrutiny -- requires almost all Americans to maintain health insurance coverage or pay a penalty.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The law also aims to improve the quality and efficiency of health care. For example, there are programs to improve care coordination and reduce fraud and abuse in Medicare, the government-run insurance program for older and disabled Americans.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">A number of the law's most popular provisions are already in effect. For instance, parents in private insurance plans that offer dependent coverage can keep their adult children on the plan up to age 26. And most plans must cover preventive health screenings, such as mammograms and colonoscopies, at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Core elements of the law -- such as expanding Medicaid, establishing the state health insurance exchanges and requiring people to have coverage or pay a penalty, known as the "individual mandate" -- aren't scheduled to take effect until 2014.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The high court could decide to uphold the law in its entirety, strike it down entirely, strip away key provisions, or delay a decision until after penalties for not having insurance are assessed. No matter how it rules, there's no sign that the torrid debate over the cost and delivery of health care in the United States will be put to rest.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">A recent Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll found, for example, that most Americans agree that changes are needed to sustain Medicare, but few want to pay higher taxes or spend more out of their own wallets to prop up the financially ailing program.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"I think it's a safe bet that the health-care cost debate is going to persist," said Ilya Somin, an associate professor at George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Va., who has written legal briefs challenging the individual mandate.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The crux of the court challenge<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">One of the key questions that the Supreme Court is being asked to address is whether the individual mandate is constitutional. Opponents of the provision, set to take effect in 2014, argue that Congress cannot force people to buy health insurance or tax them for failing to pay the penalty.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Another point of contention is whether the law can survive without the individual mandate. New protections in the Affordable Care Act ban insurers from denying anyone coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions or from inflating premiums based on a person's medical history. But the law's architects insist that it would be too costly to implement these reforms if only the sick bought insurance.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"Without that requirement, there's an incentive for people to wait and purchase coverage only after they need medical service," said Robert Zirkelbach, a spokesman for America's Health Insurance Plans, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association representing the health insurance industry.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Also at issue is the constitutionality of the law's Medicaid expansion. States, in exchange for additional federal funding, must cover nearly all non-Medicare-eligible adults at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level. In 2012, the cutoffs are $14,856 for an individual and $30,657 for a family of four.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">In the two years since its passage, the Affordable Care Act has been the target of multiple lawsuits, with a handful of cases working their way through the federal appellate court system.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">In previous cases, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington upheld the individual mandate. But the courts have not ruled in lockstep. The 11th Circuit in Atlanta found the mandate unconstitutional but allowed the rest of the law, including the Medicaid expansion, to stand.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Last November, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments from two 11th Circuit cases filed by the National Federation of Independent Business and a 26-state coalition led by the State of Florida.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">In March, the high court heard oral arguments on the Medicaid expansion and the individual mandate as well as the mandate's severability from the rest of the law. It also considered whether the fine for not buying insurance is a "penalty" or a "tax." That distinction is important because federal law bars the court from ruling on a tax dispute before the tax is levied.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Predicting the outcome<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Constitutional law experts who followed proceedings in the case believe that Justice Anthony Kennedy, a moderate Reagan-era appointee, may hold the deciding vote. On Day 2 of oral arguments in March, Kennedy said the federal government has "a heavy burden" to justify Congress' right to mandate health insurance coverage. Yet he also seemed to acknowledge the government's view that health insurance is different from other markets. Chief Justice John Roberts, another Republican appointee, also posed questions that seemed to both bolster and undercut the government's position.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"I think that there's a strong possibility that the court will uphold the entire law, 6 to 3, with Kennedy and Roberts voting to uphold it," said law professor Renée Landers, director of Suffolk University Law School's Health and Biomedical Law Concentration, in Boston.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">She found both justices' questions "quite balanced" and believes "both of them have this institutional concern for the court about wiping out in one fell swoop 70-plus years of jurisprudence on the Commerce Clause," the section of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to regulate activities that affect interstate commerce.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"If the law is invalidated in any respect, it'll be a 5-4 decision, clearly along Republican-appointee, Democratic-appointee lines," Landers added.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">At Intrade, an online financial exchange for wagering on political, entertainment and financial evdnts, investors have been predicting the individual mandate has a better than 57 percent chance of being ruled unconstitutional by the court before year's end, and a 61 percent chance of its demise before the end of 2013.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">George Mason's Somin doesn't believe the federal government's arguments in defense of the mandate stand up to scrutiny. "When you look at each one of them closely, they all break down against inspection," he said.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">What it means for patient care <span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Striking down the health reform law would end health insurance coverage for millions of Americans, disrupt efforts to improve care coordination and halt important insurance market reforms, among other reforms, according to the American Medical Association.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"We continue to support the health reform law as an important step in transforming our health-care system, although we are working hard to improve and make important changes in the law," AMA President-elect Dr. Jeremy Lazarus said in a prepared statement.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Added Michael Miller, policy director at Boston-based Community Catalyst, a national consumer advocacy group: "The implications for patients . . . and for the health-care system are catastrophic."

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Miller cited a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded study published in the journal Medical Carethat suggested that high rates of "uninsurance" in a community have a "spillover effect," negatively influencing working-age adults' and seniors' access to health-care services and satisfaction with the care they receive.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">A majority of working-age adults and children in America -- 53.5 percent in 2010, according to a study by the National Institute for Health Care Reform -- have coverage through an employer-sponsored health plan.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Tracy Watts, a senior consultant in the Washington, D.C., office of the consulting firm Mercer LLC, said people in employer-sponsored plans can expect to see continuing efforts to replace traditional coverage with so-called consumer-directed plans, which pair a high-deductible plan with some type of savings account. There will also be greater use of incentives for individuals to stay healthy and manage chronic conditions, and higher out-of-pocket costs, she said.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"With or without reform, employers are focused on how to manage costs," Watts said.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"ObamaCare" opponents, however, suggest that the public would be better off if the Supreme Court were to invalidate the entire law.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"One of the criticisms that has been leveled at people who say this [law] should go down is, 'Well, we don't want to go back to the way it was,' and we agree 100 percent that the way it was prior to the passage of this law was not working," said Dr. Richard Armstrong, a general surgeon in Newberry, Mich., and chief operating officer of Docs4PatientCare, whose members oppose the Affordable Care Act.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Instead, the organization backs a series of free-market reforms that would put health-care spending decisions back in consumers' hands.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"The bottom line in this is that we need to get back to some fiscal sanity in America," Armstrong said.

Sickle cell anemia (uh-NEE-mee-uh) is a disease affecting many African-Americans. It causes problems with the red blood cells. Normal red blood cells are round and smooth and move through blood vessels easily. Sickle cells are C-shaped and become hard and sticky. They can get stuck in small blood vessels, blocking blood flow. This can cause pain and organ damage. Sickle cells die quickly, but your body cannot make new red blood cells to replace them fast enough. This leads to anemia. People who have sickle cell anemia need constant treatment to prevent severe pain and serious health problems.

Each year, about 1 in 500 African-Americans is born with sickle cell disease, which runs in families. This means that the gene that causes sickle cell anemia is passed down from parents to children. People who have sickle cell disease got the sickle cell gene from both parents. People who have only one sickle cell gene are said to have the sickle cell "trait." They do not have the disease, but they can pass the gene to their children. About 1 in 12 African-Americans has the sickle cell trait.

If you want to have a baby, you and your partner can get a simple blood test to see if you have the sickle cell trait. If you both have the trait, your child will have a 1 in 4 chance of getting sickle cell anemia. If you both have the trait, talk to your doctor about your options. All 50 states test newborn babies for sickle cell anemia as part of their newborn screening programs.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 24pt;">What Is Sickle Cell Anemia?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cell anemia (uh-NEE-me-uh) is the most common form of sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD is a serious disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped red blood cells. “Sickle-shaped” means that the red blood cells are shaped like a crescent.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Normal red blood cells are disc-shaped and look like doughnuts without holes in the center. They move easily through your blood vessels. Red blood cells contain an iron-rich protein called hemoglobin (HEE-muh-glow-bin). This protein carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cells contain abnormal hemoglobin called sickle hemoglobin or hemoglobin S. Sickle hemoglobin causes the cells to develop a sickle, or crescent, shape.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cells are stiff and sticky. They tend to block blood flow in the blood vessels of the limbs and organs. Blocked blood flow can cause pain, serious infections, and organ damage.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Figure A shows normal red blood cells flowing freely in a blood vessel. The inset image shows a cross-section of a normal red blood cell with normal hemoglobin. Figure B shows abnormal, sickled red blood cells blocking blood flow in a blood vessel. The inset image shows a cross-section of a sickle cell with abnormal (sickle) hemoglobin forming abnormal strands.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 18pt;">Overview

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cell anemia is one type of anemia. Anemia is a condition in which your blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells. This condition also can occur if your red blood cells don't contain enough hemoglobin.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Red blood cells are made in the spongy marrow inside the large bones of the body. Bone marrow is always making new red blood cells to replace old ones. Normal red blood cells live about 120 days in the bloodstream and then die. They carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide (a waste product) from your body.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">In sickle cell anemia, the number of red blood cells is low because sickle cells don't last very long. Sickle cells usually die after only about 10 to 20 days. The bone marrow can't make new red blood cells fast enough to replace the dying ones.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cell anemia is an inherited, lifelong disease. People who have the disease are born with it. They inherit two genes for sickle hemoglobin—one from each parent.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">People who inherit a sickle hemoglobin gene from one parent and a normal gene from the other parent have a condition called sickle cell trait.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cell trait is different than sickle cell anemia. People who have sickle cell trait don't have the disease, but they have one of the genes that cause it. Like people who have sickle cell anemia, people who have sickle cell trait can pass the sickle hemoglobin gene on to their children.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 18pt;">Outlook

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cell anemia has no widely available cure. However, treatments can help with the symptoms and complications of the disease. Blood and marrow stem cell transplants may offer a cure for a small number of people.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Over the past 100 years, doctors have learned a great deal about sickle cell anemia. They know its causes, how it affects the body, and how to treat many of its complications.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sickle cell anemia varies from person to person. Some people who have the disease have chronic (long-term) pain or fatigue (tiredness). However, with proper care and treatment, many people who have the disease can have improved quality of life and reasonable health much of the time.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Due to improved treatments and care, people who have sickle cell anemia are now living into their forties or fifties, or longer.

<span style="color: #452a67; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 160%;">For many kids, rejection by father can be even more devastating than by mother.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;"> Move over, tiger moms. Dads can play an even more significant role in the development of happy, well-adjusted children than do mothers, a new study indicates. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Just in time for Father's Day, findings from a large-scale review of research shed light on how parental acceptance and rejection can affect the personalities of progeny well into adulthood.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"In our 50 years of research in every continent but Antarctica, we have found that nothing has as strong and consistent an effect on personality development as does being rejected by a parent -- especially by a father -- in childhood," said study co-author Ronald Rohner, director of the Ronald and Nancy Rohner Center for the Study of Interpersonal Acceptance and Rejection at the University of Connecticut, in Storrs.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The study, published recently in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Review, analyzed 36 studies, from 1975 to 2010, involving almost 1,400 adults and 8,600 children in 18 countries. The children ranged in age from 9 to 18, and adults were between 18 and 89. <span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">All the studies included in the review included an assessment of seven personality traits considered central to what is called "parental acceptance-rejection theory."

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Those traits -- aggression, independence, positive self-esteem, positive self-adequacy, emotional responsiveness, emotional stability and positive worldview -- were evaluated using self-report questionnaires. Participants were asked about their parents' degree of acceptance or rejection during their childhoods and about their own personality characteristics or tendencies.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"The study shows a strong relationship between those seven traits and the experience of feeling accepted and cared about by your parents," said Dr. John Sargent, a professor of psychology and pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine and chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center, in Boston.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">"What's really important to kids is to know they're accepted by their parents," Sargent said.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">Study author Rohner said fathers may have a greater impact on a child's personality because children and teenagers pay more attention to the parent who seems to have greater interpersonal power, or influence, in the family's power hierarchy.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">He explained that when a father is perceived as having more power, even if he spends less time with the children, he can have a greater impact. That's because his comments or actions seem to stand out more notably. This is despite the fact that, all over the world, mothers tend to spend more time with kids than fathers do.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">While not being accepted causes identifiable personality issues, acceptance doesn't necessarily confer particular benefits. "Unfortunately, humans respond more dramatically to negative things," Rohner said. Rejection predicts a specific set of negative outcomes -- such as hostility, low self-esteem, negativity -- while feeling loved and accepted is not as closely associated with particular positive outcomes, he explained.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">There was no difference seen in the importance of a father's love for girls versus boys.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 160%;">The study does not establish a causal connection between respondents' personalities and perceptions of being accepted or rejected.
